Our Story & Affiliations

The Zina Wood Family of Hillsboro opened Fir Lawn Memorial Park as the first endowed care memorial park of the Hillsboro area in 1929. Visitors will find a few headstones that could lead them to believe the cemetery is actually older, but several families who moved loved ones from other area cemeteries to Fir Lawn.

Memorial Day at Fir Lawn Memorial Park is typically met with about 400 vehicles through the grounds on the week-end (we actually used a dept. of transportation "counter" one year). Approximately 75-100 dozen cookies are served to visitors, who are greeted by both cemetery and mortuary staff members.

More than 200 donated veterans flags (accumulated since 1965 and include 2 flags with 48 stars) are flown on the avenues bordering the grounds, creating a beautiful and patriotic display that can be viewed nearly to the courthouse in Hillsboro. Gordon Bronleewe, a former owner of Fir Lawn, claimed to have begun the first "Avenue of Flags" in Oregon.

An inspiring Veterans Memorial is the site for Memorial Day and Veterans Day services. The tall, black granite monuments depict each branch of service, as well as the Iwo Jima Memorial. An artist did all of the diamond etching on site from Oregon memorials, shortly after immigrating to the US from Russia due to religious persecution. He stood for days in the summer sun with encyclopedias and photos of the various pieces of artwork that were to be etched.

The staff members of Donelson Funeral Chapel & Cremation Services are very active in both community and professional organizations. Here is just a short list of the local, regional and national groups where we put our time and energy.

  • International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association
  • National Funeral Directors Association
  • Oregon Funeral Directors Association
