In the early hours of March 19, 2016, Allen Eugene George passed away unexpectedly while on vacation in Bend, Oregon after suffering a massive heart attack. He was 73.
Allen was born in Windsor Colorado on January 24, 1943 to Clifford Finus George and Elizabeth Schwartzkopf. He was the second of their four sons, including older brother Claron, and younger brothers Gary and Donald.
As a child Allen and his family moved frequently and resided in Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico and finally Portland, Oregon. He graduated from Milwaukie High School in 1962. After high school, Allen enlisted in the US Navy and was stationed on the USS Yorktown during the Vietnam War. He was released from active duty and transferred to Naval Reserve status on August 17th, 1966.
Once Allen returned to Portland after honorably serving his country, he began his career with Pacific Power and Light, now known as Pacific Corp. He quickly worked his way up from the mailroom to become a well-loved computer operations shift supervisor at their downtown Portland headquarters. His computer career began on IBM tab machines and ended when information technology management as we know it was firmly established. He retired from Pacific Corp after 32 years of service in 1998 at the age of 55.
On May 19, 1973 Allen married Patricia Lee Hopkins who was a key-punch operator, and also worked for Pacific Corp. At the time of his death, Allen and Patty had been happily married for nearly 43 years. They had one daughter, Heather Marie, who was born that same year.
Allen loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. He looked forward to the summer season when he could charter a vessel for bottom, salmon, or tuna fishing at the Oregon coast. He was also very artistic and loved to make jewelry. While he was not a hunter himself, he also designed hunting knives. He not only shaped and crafted the blade himself, but he also developed one-of-a-kind handles he had scrimshawed. According to family and friends, these were excellent knives. He never sold any of the jewelry or knives he made; he was simply happy to give them as gifts to family and friends.
Allen loved to read about Native American History and had a large collection of books on the subject. He was also very interested in the UFO phenomena and liked to share the latest that he had read or heard on the SciFi channel regardless of anyone else's interest. Allen was an active member of the Beaverton Elks Lodge #1989, and could always be counted on to lend a helping hand.
Allen was preceded in death by his mother Elizabeth and father Clifford. He is survived by his wife Patricia, daughter Heather Monaghan, grandson Carter Monaghan, brothers Claron, Gary and Donald and many nieces and nephews.
