He was preceded in death by two brothers, Finley and John, and one sister, Marguerite Tatarsky.
Charles was born on August 1, 1929 in Emory, Georgia, to Rev. Finley McCorvey Grissett Sr. and Katherine Young (Doggett) Grissett. Charles spent the first years of his life living in West Cameroon, Africa, where his parents were missionaries with the Presbyterian Church USA. They returned to the United States when he was eight years old, living first in Wooster, Ohio and later in DeLand, Florida where Charles graduated from high school. He attended Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree on June 11, 1951. On July 11, 1951, Charles enlisted in the United States Navy, becoming a hospital corpsman and serving in Japan. A couple of years after his honorable discharge on July 8, 1955, he married, had three children, and worked in marine carpentry, facilities maintenance, and teaching math and science to high school and elementary school students. He lived in several locales, primarily in the Southeast United States and the Caribbean. He always maintained his interests in reading, vegetable gardening, tending fruit trees, working with his hand tools around the house, and serving as an elder in his church.
In 2004, at the age of 74, Charles met Elizabeth "Betty" Adams online and married her shortly thereafter. Together they volunteered at ECHO (Educational Concerns for Hunger Organization) in Ft. Myers, Florida, participated in Zimbabwean missions, and RV-camped extensively throughout the US and Canada. After settling down full-time in Hillsboro, Oregon, they initiated the creation of a Food Bank garden at their church, Hillsboro Presbyterian.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 2pm at Hillsboro Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Charles to ECHO at
