Daniel Serna Martinez

Longtime North Plains resident, Mr. Daniel Serna Martinez, 95, passed away at his home surrounded by family on Sunday, July 30, 2023 in North Plains, OR.

Daniel was born April 21, 1928 to Juan & Elisa (Serna) Martinez in Hidalgo, Texas where he attended middle school until the 8th grade. He had worked as a farmworker and moved to Oregon in 1973 living in Tigard and Forest Grove. Daniel worked as a custodian at Portland Community College in Rock Creek until retiring. He enjoyed gardening, wood working, baseball, attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, coloring, puzzles, music and building.

“Daniel Martinez was a man who loved his family unconditionally. He was an avid walker, walking five miles daily and he became a morning greeting for the many in the North Plains community. Kids would learn his schedule and meet at the fence to give him a smile, a wave or a flower. Daniel had a strong work ethic. He showed patience, effort and pride in all he did. You could always find him at a sporting event of his grandkids, planting in his garden, building one of his creations or listening to music. Our abuelito gave and received so much love and will be missed deeply,” wrote the family.

Daniel was preceded in death by his wife, Maria I. Martinez; daughters, Angelica Martinez & Narcedalia Manzo; granddaughter, Sophia Vidalez; great-granddaughter, Alía Raquel Byrne – Amaya; and son-in-law, Jimmy Amaya.

He is survived by his daughter, Raquel Amaya of Hillsboro, OR; sons, Esiquel Martinez of Portland and Carlos Martinez of Hillsboro, OR; son in-law, Armando Manzo of Hillsboro, OR; granddaughters, Sarita Amaya of Portland, OR and Jamy Amaya of Hillsboro, OR; grandsons, Tommy Amaya, Tristan Martinez, Mike & Ricardo Vidalez all of Hillsboro, OR, Cody Vidalez of Clackamas, OR, Skyler Martinez of Forest Grove, OR, Josh Martinez and Obed Garza both of WA; 17 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Thursday, August 3, 2023 at Fir Lawn Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 1070 West Main St. Hillsboro, OR 97123. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 4, 2023 at the Valley Memorial Park Rose Room in the Mausoleum, 3929 SE Tualatin Valley Hwy. Hillsboro, OR 97123. Jamy Amaya will officiate. Daniel will be laid to rest with his wife Maria at 1:00 p.m. at the Valley Memorial Park. Pallbearers will include Samuel Byrne-Amya, Gabriel Byrne Amaya, Ryan Byrne, Ricardo, Mike, and Cody Vidalez, Skyler Martinez, Jaime Soltero and Adrean Vidalez.
