Dayton Eugene (Gene) Swartwood died at the age of 86 on May 17, 2016 at his home in Cornelius, Oregon. He was born on Sept. 27, 1929 in Parker, Kansas, the son of John M. and Lillie (Measner) Swartwood.
His parents moved to Oregon when he and his older brother John Jr. were very young and he grew up mostly in Oregon. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in Germany from 1952 to 1954 and then in inactive service until 1959 when he was discharged. In 1952 he and Oma Jean Hayes were married in Las Vegas Nevada. They settled in their present home in Cornelius in 1962. He worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad from 1955 until 1991 when he retired.
Well known for his great sense of humor, he was well loved by family and friends and was one of the favorites among the many cousins. Interests included fishing and reading Western books. Another interest was playing Horse Shoes. He played in competitions and brought home several championship trophies. He was talented and creative in woodworking, building furniture, and remodeling the family home.
His parents, John and Lillie Swartwood and sister Irene Liberty preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Oma Jean, son Donald and Virginia Swartwood of Banks, Or. and daughter Linda and Tim Gatton of Cornelius, Or. and five grandchildren; Sandy, Teresa, Lisa, Kenneth, and Jordan.
Other survivors include three brothers and a sister; John Jr. of Cove Orchard, Or. Tom and Juanita Swartwood of Portland, Or. Jack and Grace Swartwood of Tigard, Or. and Betty Thompson of Forest Grove, Or.
He is also survived by 14 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial service will be held on Friday, May 20 at 10:00 AM at Fir Lawn Memorial Park, 1070 West Main Street in Hillsboro, Oregon with Pastor Jack Swartwood officiating.
Viewing will be Thursday from 3:00 to 5:00 PM and on Friday at 9:00 AM.
There will be a potluck lunch following the service. It will be held at the Christian Praise Center, 254 S. 19th in Cornellius, Oregon.
