Don was born May 5th, 1928 in Farewell, NE. His Mother passed away shortly after his birth. He was raised by his Dad an older sister and other relatives. The family of six, Don and his sisters, Mildred, Fern, Gladys and brother Arnold, later moved to Idaho and then to Oregon. He grew up on a small family farm near Hillsboro, OR. He attended Forest Grove High School and graduated in 1947. His Dad remarried when Don was in High School and his second step mother Eula, paid for him to attend church camp where he accepted Christ as his savior. He always felt strongly about the youth going to church camp and he and Millie have been strong supporters of Camp White Branch.
His first job was at a service station where he changed tires on the log trucks. He went into the Forest Service where he planted many trees, had lookout duty and worked in fire suppression. Next he worked at a sawmill out in the coast range. During this time he took a correspondence course in electronics and left the job at the sawmill when he got a job at Tektronix in the fall of 1951. He was drafted in December of 1954 and was stationed at various bases in the states and in Alaska (before it was a state); he was honorably discharged in 1956. He returned to Aloha and worked for Tektronix for the next 32 years and retired on 4-29-1983. He then worked at the Aloha Church of God on the building and grounds.
Don was attending the Baptist church in Forest Grove, OR where he met Mildred DeVos. They were married in Monmouth, OR in 1958. They moved to Aloha, OR and began attending the Aloha Church of God. They added to their family with a son Paul and a daughter Katherine (Kathy). Over the years they had many family adventures, camping, fishing, hiking and backpacking. Don was active in helping with the Boy Scouts and went on several backpacking trips with the troop. He climbed Mt. Hood and also Mt. St. Helens before it erupted. He used to joke that he had been somewhere that no longer exists.
In 1988 he decided that he and his wife should retire from the church so they could go south in the winter. Don and Millie enjoyed their time as snowbirds in various part of Arizona for the next several years.
In 2009 his health had begun to deteriorate and after caring for him at home for many years Don was moved to Rosewood Memory Care center where he spent his last two months.
Don is survived by Mildred his wife of 56 years, his son Paul, daughter, Katherine (Kathy) and his sister Gladys Lyddane and many nieces and nephews.
