Eugene “Gene” Sturtevant, 94, of Hillsboro, OR, passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2022.
Gene was born on June 28, 1928, to George and Margaret Sturtevant in Pollock, South Dakota. During his youth, Gene grew up working on the family farm located north of Pollock. His years working with his father and grandfather, as well as the close friendships formed in the Pollock area provided him with a lifetime of fond memories. After graduating from Pollock High School in 1946, Gene worked in the Pollock Grain Elevator. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force (1951-1955), where he reached the rank of Staff Sergeant, serving in the Strategic Air Command.
After Gene’s military service, he majored in Agriculture at South Dakota State University (1958-1962). After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture, he was employed by the Soil Conservation Service (USDA) for 25-years, retiring as the District Conservationist in Pendleton, Oregon (1978-1987). Gene also served as the District Conservationist in Hillsboro, Oregon (1972-1978) and Corvallis, Oregon (1966-1972).
In 1948, Gene married Joy Belle Sturtevant (Peterson), also of Pollock, South Dakota. Gene and Joy went on to have four children.
After his retirement in 1987, Gene and Joy spent their time in service to their family and to the churches where they attended – Cedar Mill Bible Church (Beaverton, OR) and the Pendleton Free Methodist Church.
Gene was preceded in death by both of his parents and his sister, Phyllis Reierson. He is survived by his wife, Joy; his children: Jeanine Rice, Daniel Sturtevant, Dawn Nelson, Mark Sturtevant; and by 19 grandchildren, and 31 great grandchildren.
Gene was laid to rest at Fir Lawn Memorial Park in Hillsboro, Oregon.
