EVELYN VIOLET (DOBRA) GALLAWAY
Born: 30 November 1936 in Orenco, Oregon
Died: 25 May 2015 at home in Hillsboro, Oregon after a brief struggle with cancer
Evelyn was born on 30 Nov 1936 at the then family home in Orenco, Oregon to John and Julia (Orban) Dobra. In 1940 the family moved to their home on Freeman Street in Hillsboro where Evelyn spent the remainder of her childhood and school years. Evelyn graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1955.
Evelyn married Paul Gallaway on 01 July 1955 in Hillsboro, Oregon and they are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary this year.
Evelyn and Paul raised four (4) sons at their current home of 51 years in Hillsboro where she enjoyed being a loving homemaker and wife; baking, cooking, canning, gardening and hosting family and friends and actively participating in church activities and Bible Study Fellowship. Evelyn always maintained an open door policy at the home and anyone was welcomed with a meal, fresh cookies or pie at any time. As a mother and grandmother, Evelyn shared her love of cooking and canning; many times with children and grandchildren sitting on the counter next to her while she baked cookies. Evelyn also supported her siblings while they were on the mission field by opening her home and having their children live in her home during high school, college and on summer holidays.
Evelyn was a Hospice Volunteer and served for 12 years as the Volunteer Coordinator for Washington County Hospice. Her love and compassion for people was an amazing asset in this role. She resigned her role and returned to a full time homemaker when her husband Paul retired in 1993.
Evelyn's life revolved around her strong and ever growing faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. She was an active member in the Hillsboro First Baptist Church during her childhood years and adult life. Later in life she attended Sonrise Church, and Grace & Truth Church for a short time before returning to Hillsboro First Baptist. She taught Sunday School for many years and held Back Yard Vacation Bible School for the neighborhood kids during the summers. Evelyn was actively involved in Bible Study Fellowship for many years as a student and Discussion Leader. While at First Baptist Church, Evelyn's love of music, piano and organ blossomed and she was the church organist for many years beginning while she was in High School.
Evelyn was a Godly woman and had a significant impact on the lives of those people with whom she came into contact. She was always available to listen, support and encourage those around her but more importantly, to point them to the Gospel of Christ. Her desire was that her life would be an example which would point others to Christ and that her family and successive generations would live their lives for Christ. Evelyn's motto for the family was Psalms 100:5 - God is faithful to all generations which seek Him - and that was her desire for her family.
