Gary's friends describe him as a loyal, funny, quick-witted person who enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed restoring John Deere Tractors and his '63 Dodge Dart. He had a close network of great friends and enjoyed golfing and attending social activities with them. He loved listening, dancing and singing to 50/60's and country music.
Gary had several nicknames including "Meat" by his friends, referring back to his meat cutting days and "Gilbert" given to him by his youngest granddaughter Kayla, which became his popular nickname by several of his grandchildren.

Little did we know that morning,
God was to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.
You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide,
And though we cannot see you,
You are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.
