Hazel Stream Moore died on October 30, 2024, at age 101 years old.
She was born August 6, 1923, in Hillsboro, Oregon, the second of three daughters of Perry C. Stream Jr. and Domima Sinclair Stream. She grew up on a farm north of Hillsboro, reveling in the outdoors. She was a quick student, particularly adept in spelling, geography and art. Her teacher for 5th through 8th grade was her older sister Clara, and her constant companion was her twin, Helen. Hazel was athletic and an enthusiastic team member, especially in baseball; she also reveled in horse riding, cow riding, ballet, tap dancing, and gymnastics. She graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1941.
She married Herbert L. Moore on Nov. 22, 1943, and soon after gave birth to two daughters, Sandra and Donni. When empty nesting was on the horizon, she and Herb expanded their family by adopting three children in quick succession, Kris, Geri and Michael. When her daughter's best friend's parents were killed in an auto accident, she and Herb welcomed two teenagers, Lanie and Warren, into the family. Because she and Herb were only 42 when their first grandchild was born, they took on the names "Big Mom" and "Big Dad," and were known to many as the Bigs.
Home was a sprawling stone house adjacent to the family farm. The swimming pool was virtually always open to neighbors and friends, and she and Herb delighted in hosting parties for any and every occasion. She made sure that their children's friends - as well as nieces and nephews, convalescing family, and those needing transitional housing - felt welcome.
Hazel's creative accomplishments included embroidery, appliqu, quilting, needlepoint, and painting, and culminated in her gardens. She enjoyed reading. Her faith was no nonsense: she told her first son that "heaven was all around us, as close to the ends of every blade of grass."
She was predeceased by her parents, her sister Clara Claycamp, her sister Helen Seiffert, her daughter Donni Moore, her sons Michael Moore and Warren Flink, and son-in-law Henry "Butch" Braukman. She is survived by her daughters Sandi (Ken) Gratteri, Lanie Braukman, and Geri Nelson, and her son Kris (Ryan) Moore. She is survived also by her grandchildren Kurt Jordan, Kendra Gratteri, Jason Kuhn, Brandi (Wade) Sahlfeld, Roman (Jane) Gratteri, Lindsay (Dan) Marshall, Kimber Flink, and Lewis Cochran, and by great-grandchildren Kaylee Jordan, Kali Kuhn, Brandon Sahlfeld, Sydney Sahlfeld, Sicily Gratteri, Tuscany Gratteri, Dash Gratteri, Brauk Marshall, Chase Flink, Carter Flink, and Nicolas Flink.
Our family is grateful to Teresa LaBarre and her team of caregivers, including Juana, Odila, Zoe, and Sandy, for extraordinary loving attention to our mother's every need. Thanks to the staff of Avamere at Bethany for its professional support over the past nine years, and to Agape Hospice NW for its support during the final months of her life.
