Helen Inga Walters

Helen I. Wick Walters, 93, died October 9, 2010, at Capuson Adult Foster Care.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m., Oct. 14, at All Saints Episcopal Church, 372 NE Lincoln St.
Helen (Inga) Wick was born Jan, 23, 1917 in Havre, Mont., to Merlin and Delia Wick. She began school in Missoula, Mt. then moved to Hillsboro and attended BW Barnes School and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1935. After high school she ushered at the Venetian Theater and worked in the cannery.
She began dance lessons at 13 and teaching dance at age 15. She established Hillsboro's original dance studio in a room at her parents home on 4th Ave., Hillsboro and is still in business. During the 50's and 60's she taught ballroom to 7th and 8th graders at many of the area grade school. She choreographed for local high school musicals and Theater in the Grove. Helen worked on the Miss Hillsboro and Miss Oregon pageants. She organized the entertainment for downtown Hillsboro Western Fest for several years. She was a lifetime member of Dance Educators of America. She had a zest for living and loved dance. Helen taught dance for 75 years. After she stopped teaching at the age 88, she still went to the studio every day. She danced her way through life.
She married Charles E. Walters Oct. 4, 1943. They lived in Cedar Mill. During WWII she lived in Gold Beach, OR. and Port Angeles, WA where her husband was stationed. While in Gold Beach she worked in a restaurant and Port Angeles in a dress shop. When he went overseas she moved back to Hillsboro and worked for the housing authority and in the shipyards in Portland. During that time she taught dance to the shipyard workers and their children. After the war she lived in Portland and worked for Herschweiss Manufacturing. In 1949 they returned to Hillsboro and lived in an apartment over her parents home. Her husband owned a nursery which she help with while operating her dance studio and raising their daughter. In 1955 they moved to their home on the nursery on River Rd. After the death of her husband in 1985 she moved to her house on Laura St.
Helen's hobby was sewing and crocheting, leaving many pieces for her family. She was a long time member of All Saints Episcopal Church, a member of Pythian Sisters and Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Walters; sister, Flora Sundberg; and brother, Don Wick.
She is survived by a daughter, Inga Sprinkel; son-in-law, Bill Sprinkel; grandson, Linc Sprinkel; granddaughter-in-law, Katy Sprinkel, and great-grandson, Shaun Sprinkel all of Hillsboro.
