Herbert Moore

June 19, 1923 — January 5, 2016

Herbert Len Moore died on January 5, 2016, at the age of 92, his hand being held by his wife of 72 years and surrounded by family.

He was born June 19, 1923 in New Albany, Indiana. His parents were Edward F. Moore and Ruby Goss Moore. Herb was the second of their eleven children.

He moved to Oregon and bought a log truck. That first truck led to bigger enterprises, including several sawmills, a logging company, and H & H Trucking Company, which was the largest independently owned trucking company in the Northwest in the 1970s.

Herb married Hazel Stream of Hillsboro in 1943. They were parents to seven children: Sandra (Ken) Gratteri, Donni Moore, Lanie Flink (Butch) Braukman, Warren Flink, Kris (Ryan Wilcoxen), Geri Nelson, and Michael Moore. Two of his children, Donni and Michael, predeceased him. He is survived by grandchildren and great-grandchildren Kurt Jordan (Kaylee), Kendra Gratteri, Jason and Jocelyn Kuhn (Kali, Landon and Baylor), Brandi Braukman and Wade Sahlfeld (Brandon and Sydney), Roman and Jane Gratteri (Sicily), Lindsay Braukman, and Kimber Flink (Chase and Carter), and Lewis Cochran.

Herb's enthusiasms included flying his own planes, piloting his own boats, and racing motorcycles. He purchased two Harleys after he reached his 80's. He loved the San Juan Islands and felt tremendously at home at his vacation house on Decatur Island. Herb was intensely interested in family, and was known as "Big Dad" to countless family and friends.

A memorial service, followed by burial and then a reception at his daughter Sandi's house, will be held Monday, January 11, 2016, beginning at 1 pm at the Old Scotch Church, 30685 NW Scotch Church Road, Hillsboro, Oregon.
