March 21, 1931 — July 9, 2011

Hubert (Hugh) W. Nelson, Sr. 80, died Saturday, July 9, in Hillsboro.
A celebration of Hugh's life was held at his Hillsboro home Tuesday evening, July 12.
A Memorial Service will be held at an undetermined time, in the area of his family's roots near Newburg, Yamhill County, Oregon.
Mr. Nelson, a great grandson of an 1844 Oregon pioneer family, was born March 21, 1931 in Portland, Oregon.
The son of Josiah Wayne and Hazel Elizabeth (Sutherland) Nelson, Hugh spent his early years in school in Portland, Oregon, where he was chosen a prince in the 1939 Rose Festival. His family moved to Fern Hill Farm near Forest Grove, Oregon in 1941 where he helped on his father's farm. He graduated from Forest Grove High School in 1948 and attended Pacific University, and resided most of his life in Washington County.

He took great pleasure in maintaining his home and avidly watched movies of all genres, talking about them to his children and grandchildren in Oregon and across the country. His love and interest in animals, reading and collecting books, provided him tremendous happiness and relaxation.
Hugh married Sandra Lynne Scott Matteucci in Forest Grove, Oregon on April 7, 1950.
Hugh is survived by his wife Sandra, son H. Wayne Jr., daughter Nancy Lynne Phillips, sons: Craig Lee. Brian Scott., Casey Scott. Grand children: Amy Phillips, Melissa Piper, Cameron Nelson, Ryan Nelson, Sarah Nelson, Eion Nelson, Jennifer Nelson, Emma Hansen, Cameron Yourston, Christopher Yourston, Nicholas Nelson, Kaden Nelson and great-grandchildren: Jason Evans, Hunter Evans, Molly Nelson, Ava Piper, and Hayden Nelson.
