Kenneth Gene Hext -

On December 11, 2018 at 12:04 PM Ken was surrounded by his loved ones as he entered the Kingdom.

Ken was born on June 28, 1935 in Belen, New Mexico to Deward John Hext and Stella Lavina Pulliam Hext. At the age of 9 years Ken moved North with his family to Oregon eventually settling in Salem, Oregon.

On January 21, 1953, at the age of 17 years, Ken joined the US Navy. Ken served during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged on April 12, 1956. Ken continued to serve his country in the Naval Reserves until January 19, 1961.

In April 1956 Ken was introduced to Colene Chatfield by his sister, Barbara, at Peninsula Open Bible Church in North Portland. Ken and Colene were married at the same church on October 13, 1956 and settled in NE Portland. Ken and Colene were blessed with 4 children.

Early in his career Ken worked at Nabisco as a cookie baker. Ken then went to work at Richmond Tank Car as a welder. In 1963 Ken started teaching welding at Portland Community College. Ken taught during the day while going to school in the evenings and obtained his Bachelor's Degree in 1967.

Ken retired from teaching at Portland Community College in the Welding Technology Department, Mathematics and Advanced Technology Divisions on May 15, 1993.

After retirement Ken enjoyed traveling with his wife. They traveled via cruise ship to various ports including the Panama Canal, Mexico, the Caribbean, Alaska and Hawaii.

Ken is survived by his dearly loved wife of 62 years Colene Hext; 3 of his 4 children, Charlene Myers, Ken (Butch) Hext Jr. and Brenda Falcon; his 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Ken is also survived by his siblings, Deward Hext, Barbara Roberts and Larry Jordan.

Ken was Preceded in death by his parents, Deward Hext and Stella Wirick; his son Kevin Hext; his grandsons Pedro (Petey) Falcon III and Nathan Hext; and his granddaughter Amanda Hext.
