Kenneth Lowell McGough otherwise known as “ Doc”, 89, died in his home on June 23rd surrounded by his family and loved ones.
Ken was born in Wenatchee Washington at the Deaconess Hospital on November 9th, 1929 to Edna and Colbert McGough, the youngest of seven children.
Ken grew up in East Wenatchee and in his youth his family moved to Cashmere Washington. He graduated in 1947 from Cashmere High School. Ken went on to Washington State and graduated with his Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture in 1951. While at Washington State he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and the ROTC. After his graduation he volunteered for jump school at Fort Benning and spent two years in the Air Force in places such as Cassablanca and Tripoli. Upon his return he entered and completed the Veterinary Medicine Program at Washington State. He graduated in 1959.
On May 8, 1954 he married Betty Lieuallen of Adams Oregon. They were married for 33 years and raised five children. Betty passed away in 1991.
After a short time practicing Veterinary Medicine in Idaho Ken moved his family to Hillsboro, Oregon. He worked for a local veterinarian and in the early 60’s he started his own practice. He was recognized for his innovative design of a future looking clinic that was built in Rock Creek in 1975. He continued to expand his horizons and built a clinic in Warren, Oregon as well as having a mobile veterinary clinic serving the citizens of Vernonia and surrounding areas. His impact on the local community as a veterinarian continues to this day.
After a trip to Hawaii Ken was bitten by the art bug. He moved to Manzanita and opened up an art gallery in Nehalem Oregon in the late 80’s. Three Village Gallery was not only his place of business he wanted it to be an experience for his customers. He continued a small veterinary practice for the locals while running his art gallery. He truly had a love for both.
On April 13, 2002 Ken married his wife of 17 years Nadine Flaherty. They enjoyed playing golf, traveling, gardening and playing cards together. Gardening became Ken’s new passion and everything associated with it. He spent hours researching plants and flowers, ordering them and having a strategic plan for planting them. When he was not outside gardening he spent his time watching his favorite sports teams and golfers. He also developed a love for reading.
One of Ken’s biggest adventures was skydiving on his 80th birthday. He even convinced some of his children and friends to join him. While he was able Ken always looked forward to hunting with his son’s and son-in-law. He had a true love for the outdoors and people.
Survivors include his wife Nadine; Children Patty and Scott Bertsch, Mike and Tracie McGough, Terry and Steve Canfield, Kevin and Sue McGough and Kim and Jeff Lierman; 14 grand children and 14 great-grand children. Step-Children Julie and Mike Donavon, Bud and Carole Newberry, Jim and Vickie Newberry; 14 grand children and 22 great-grand children
A celebration of life will be held Saturday June 29th at 1:30 pm at Bethany Presbyterian Church; 15505 NW Springville Rd. Portland, OR 97229. Contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
