Mary Lee Stafford (nee Phelps), a life-long resident of Hillsboro, was a graduate of Hillsboro High School in 1958. Days after graduating from high school. Mary married Larry Stafford, a union that reached a milestone 50-years on June 7, 2008.
Soon after the birth of her children, Mary embarked on her degree in elementary education, and completed that degree in 2 and 1/2 years at Portland State College. That lead to a 33-year career teaching in the Hillsboro School District, a Master's degree, and a profoundly positive impact on thousands of students and untold colleagues.
She was an enthusiastic traveler, as long as it was by car or train, visiting many areas of the United States and Canada. Finally overcoming her fear of flying in the early '90s, she added Hawaii, the New England states, and Scotland, Wales England and northern Europe to her travels. But her favorite spot was always the Oregon coast, and especially Cape Kiwanda.
Mary was a true student of cooking, and was determined to, and succeeded in, becoming a gourmet chef, much to the delight her family and friends. More than anything, Mary enjoyed entertaining for the holidays Halloween and Christmas were typically epic productions, especially the food or she was found in her flower gardens, reading a historical novel, enjoying a house full of pets, and listening non-stop to a huge variety of music.
Larry and Mary's marriage produced two sons. Scott (born 1959), married his wife Emily in 1998, and produced two of Mary's grandchildren, Mia (15) and Carson (10). Mark (born 1960), married his wife Joni in 1984, and produced three grandchildren, Austin (26), Braden (20), and Chase (19), as well as two great-grandchildren, Kyra (2) and Bradley (newborn). She was proud of both her sons, and looked forward to spending time with, and spoiling, all of her grandchildren.
Mary is survived by her sons and her sister, Kim (Phelps) Laws, and their respective families.
The family would encourage any contributions be made to the Oregon chapter of
the Alzheimer's Association.
