Megan was born in West Virginia and grew up in West Virginia and upstate New York and spent her final year of high school living with relatives in Scotland. The family moved to Minnesota and she attended the University of Minnesota. She moved to Oregon and got married to Ed Kihlgren and started managing Dominos Pizza stores. She managed several Dominos in cities including Tacoma, Washington and Knoxville, Tennessee. She returned to Oregon and bought two Domino's franchises. After she had her son, Eion, she earned her BS from Portland State University. She sold her Domino's stores. She decided to become a nurse and found an accelerated RN program at SUNY Binghamton. She, Ed, and Eion moved to Binghamton, New York where she earned her RN in 15 months. She moved back to the Portland area residing in Cornelius. She worked at Terwilliger Plaza for a while and then found a position at the VA in the Gastrointestinal unit. Megan really enjoyed working with the veterans and the sense of humor required to work with them in the GI unit was right up her alley. Later on Megan became a Scheduler for the Women's Clinic at the VA.
Megan loved to bake. She was especially skilled at cookie baking. As a child she was involved in 4-H and baked "Empire Biscuits" for the county fair and always earned a blue ribbon. As an adult her co-workers received delicious cookies on many different occasions. Megan sewed; she started out in 4-H; in high school she had a job teaching people to use their new sewing machines at Sears; she also took up quilting. She made quite a few beautiful quilts in her time.. She eventually had to give up quilting as she had vision issues due to her AVM. Megan was always very active; she loved to walk her dogs, she skied with abandon, and took Boot Camp classes with her sister Liz. When she was approaching 50 she took up running with her sister Liz. She and Liz ran the Portland Marathon in 2013. She was very proud of that achievement.
Megan was both frugal and generous. She saved her money carefully and she always had a job but was quite willing to share the money that she had. We all remember her laughter. As a child she had a laugh that we referred to as the bullet laugh. We would do anything that we could to make her produce that laugh. Her laughter was infectious. Megan dearly loved her dogs; she had many different dogs over the years. Megan was brave and bold. She knew that she had the AVM but she continued to live life to the fullest. She was almost 40 when she decided to become a nurse and move her family across the country to attend nursing school. Later on Megan had a bout with Breast Cancer. She boldly continued to live her life and got through her Chemo and Radiation to become a breast cancer survivor. In the last few years Megan worked on decorating her home. She would excitedly bring fabric swatches when we met with her. She sought out others' opinions on the fabrics that she would use to reupholster some chairs or the couch.. Weeks before her death she was talking to contractors about renovating her bathroom. She always kept a positive outlook and lived as though she had much more life to live. Megan is greatly missed by her family, friends, and colleagues.
Megan is survived by her mother, Grace, her son, Eion, her sisters Elizabeth and Mairi and her ex-husband Ed. She was preceded in death by her father Eion G. Scott.
