With sad hearts, we said goodbye to our mother, Mildred Read Engeldinger on March 7, 2016. She was born June 12, 1927 and grew up in the Rose City neighborhood of Portland. She graduated from Marylhurst College in 1949 with a degree in elementary education. Her love of books and learning allowed her to practice her passion, teaching children how to read.
Millie met Don Engeldinger and they were married in 1954. Don owned and operated the Delta Drug store on Main Street in Hillsboro with his father. She taught first grade in Hillsboro until their first child, Mary Beth, arrived. She was a devoted full time spouse and mom who cared more about laughing and having fun than cooking and cleaning. Millie and Don's legacy was building a nurturing home with unconditional love and support for their children that was subsequently extended to spouses and grandchildren.
Millie was sustained by her deep and abiding faith in Jesus and lived her faith everyday as a person of prayer. She was a tremendous mother to Mary Beth Engeldinger (Clark Balfour), Annie Corey, Rose Engeldinger (Scott Henningsen) and Fred Engeldinger. She was a proud grandmother of David, Michael and Joseph Balfour, AdriAnne Corey, Joel Henningsen and Bethany and Don Engeldinger.
Mom, you were a powerful person who touched many people with grace, love and hope. We are thankful that by example you taught us compassion, honesty and hard work. We are also thankful that we had such loving parents who taught us faith in the Lord and eternal values. You ran a great race and we are glad you now get to claim your victory.
