Naomi Marie Quentin (Calkins)
July 3, 1931 - May 19, 2014
Naomi passed away due to complications of pneumonia. Her family was by her side. She was born in Milliken, Colorado to Hazel and Loyd Calkins. They soon moved to Post Falls Idaho. This is where she met "Bob" Robert Quentin on a blind date and they married in 1949.She is survived by her two daughters: Sandi/David of Gaston, Oregon and Barbi/Scott of Hillsboro Oregon. Naomi is also survived by her two brothers, Delos Calkins of Yamhill Oregon and Rodney Calkins of Texas. She also leaves behind her partner for the last twenty years, Floyd W of Gaston.Floyd and Naomi shared many passions together: Family and friends, traveling, crafting and bowling.Naomi was not just a Mother; she was a Friend, Artist, Teacher, Crafter, Quilter, and Recipe Tester/Trader. One of the family's Cousin's recently shared: "Family get together's will not be the same without Naomi's Calico Bean's and Bob's barbequed Ribs!!""Naomi had many chapters in her life, Military Wife, Mother of two girls and Cherished Partner. She volunteered for the Red Cross during Bob's active duty. Her daughter's births many years apart gave her two opportunities to raise wonderful women. And a square dancing passion led to a 20 year partnership. She was a- teacher to all who would listen, from the basic sewing machine to the fanciest quilting machines, wood working to ceramics and tole painting. One thing in common thru the many chapters in Naomi's life was the delight she had while bowling. This delight was evident from the 14 lb. ball she carried to the number of trophies collected as well as the friendships made. She bowled with Bob on military bases, as well as many years with neighbors in Aloha, to eventually Senior League in Hillsboro with Floyd. After Bob's retirement in 1970, while stationed in Michigan, the Quentin's packed up and moved to Portland Oregon. It was in Clackamas Oregon that Naomi opened Red Barn Ceramics on Sunnyside Road. Naomi's crafting did not stop here as she went on to "Sugar and Spice" holiday bazaars in the Hillsboro area later in life. They moved to Aloha in 1972 and Naomi worked at Tektronix for many years. She was creative here as well, as a Technical Writer. She retired from Tektronix in 1993. Her and Bob continued to raise their youngest daughter and lived in a neighborhood of cherished friends. Naomi also was a Foster Parent in the 1980's to Carrie Gish. Carrie brought joy and Grand Children into her life as well as two Great Grand Children. In 1988, Barbi married Scott and made the family complete giving Naomi much joy. Her beloved Bob passed in 1994. Floyd joined Mom during their retirement years. He brought with him a new family of four adult children and many Grand Children. They spent their time crafting, shopping for new toys, and traveling Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana together. In 2002, Naomi, Floyd and Sandi joined forces and moved to Gaston Oregon. This is where Naomi finally had all of her family in one place, as well as having the sewing room of her dreams. This included a beautiful entry way (filled with quilts, water feature etc.) to a quilter's paradise with a wall of fabric the size of most quilt stores! She enjoyed this room and was happy beingcreative.Naomi's wish was for no fuss or funeral. We will instead be having a Celebration of her life.
July 19, 2014, from 3 - 9 pm. The celebration will be held at the Noble Woods Park in Hillsboro.(Same location as Naomi's 80th Birthday party in the park) Please RSVP with the family.
