One of the greats of the Greatest Generation, Richard Bogue died July 15, 2014, at age 93.A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, 2014, at Bethany Presbyterian Church, 15505 N.W. Springville Road, Portland.Richard was born Feb. 18, 1921, in Galesburg, Ill., to Freeman S. and Nina (Reck) Bogue; shortly after the family moved to Seattle, where he and his two brothers grew up. Richard graduated from (and played baseball at) Roosevelt High School, Seattle, Class of '39. He worked for the post office before being called for service in the U.S. Navy in WWII. He was a radioman in England, the Azores and North Africa.On his return, he married Ruth Walker and they celebrated 65 years of marriage before her death in 2011. Back at work at the post office, his career included carrying mail and being an investigative aide and postal inspector. He retired in 1973. Richard then worked for Zurbrugg Construction for several years as a finish carpenter. He was a fine woodworker and built many of the furnishings for the family's homes over the years. He also enjoyed participating in his children's activities, especially the ones that involved baseballs. He was a lifelong sports fan, cheering most enthusiastically for the UW Huskies, the Mariners and recently the Hops. Richard was an elder and a deacon in the Presbyterian Church. He had been a member of Bethany for almost 50 years, where he enjoyed playing softball and being a member of the pinochle group and of the boat group.Richard is survived by his children, Patricia, Carol and Donald (Linda); five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Phil; and nieces and nephews.Remembrances may be made to Bethany Presbyterian Church.
