Richard (Dick) Duvall died early on a Thursday morning due to complications from infection. He was 84 years old. Dick was born in Portland to Frederick and Hildur (Carlson) Duvall and was the youngest of six brothers. He grew up in both Garden Home and Timber, Oregon. At the age of 16, Dick joined the merchant marines, and then served in the US Army for two years during the Korean War. In 1953, Dick went to work for the US Postal Service until his retirement 32 years later.
Dick married Dorothy (Dottie) Schmutz in 1959 and they moved to his current address in Tualatin in 1965, where they raised two children. Dick was an avid golfer, going back to his childhood years as a caddy at Portland Golf Club. Around 1970, he earned his GED, quit smoking, and went on a health kick that lasted the rest of his life. Some of his other favorite activities were biking, hiking, and spending time with his family and friends. Dick and Dottie enjoyed working in their yard and garden, taking the family camping, and doing crossword puzzles together. In his later years, Dick enjoyed some international travel (Spain, Sweden, Thailand, India) and he visited his son and family in Guam almost every winter.
Dick will be remembered as hardworking, generous, good friend, and loving father, grandfather, and uncle. He is preceded in death by his wife, Dottie, in 1988, and all five of his brothers. He is survived by his children, Karin (and Ed) Doyle, and Dan (and Luzviminda) Duvall. He has four grandchildren, Krystina and Kaleb Duvall, and Erika and Linnea Doyle, many nieces and nephews, and close friends in the Jackson family who have shared his home for the past 22 years.
There will be no service per Dick's wishes. An open house gathering of Dick's family, friends, and neighbors will take place on Saturday, March 15th, from 3-6 pm at Dick's home at 9485 SW Killarney Lane, Tualatin. Gifts in memory of Dick may given to The American Red Cross, Bonnie L. Hayes Small Animal Shelter, or Love INC of Greater Hillsboro.
