Robert Joseph Pranger

Robert Joseph Pranger, 83, of Cornelius, died Wednesday, July 8, 2020. A private service, beginning with the Recitation of the Holy Rosary and a Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 17 at the Visitation Catholic Church, 4285 Visitation Road in Forest Grove. Private burial rites will follow at Valley Memorial Park, 3929 S.E. Tualatin Valley Highway in Hillsboro.
Robert was born in Hillsboro, Oregon to Francis (Frank) and Anna Pranger, the third of 6 children. Robert graduated with the Hillsboro High School class of 1954 and the University of Portland Class of 1958. He entered the US Air Force as a Second Lieutenant in October 1958, was promoted to First Lieutenant, and served until 1963. Robert designed and tested parachutes in the USAF. He made 101 jumps. He dreamed of being an aeronautical engineer at NASA. Unfortunately, his military career was cut short when he developed type 1 diabetes.
Robert married Judy Grubbs in Pendleton, Oregon and they had seven children. He was faithfully married to Judy for 58 years.
Robert worked as a general engineer for Boeing and then as a civil engineer for the US Soil Conservation Service designing bridges and dams all over Oregon for 35 years, until his retirement in 1993. Robert was the owner of Pranger Tree Farm for 40 years.
Community activities included:1. Joined Knights of Columbus first, second, and third degree in council 1634 on 12-1-1955. He then became Grand Knight of Council 1634 from July 1968 through June 1969. He made fourth degree in Assembly 1292 on 5-1-1973. He became State Advocate In 1983. 2. He was member of Tualatin Valley Men’s Gard Club 1969-present, trustee in 1973.3. Charter member (1962) of International Association of Architects and Engineers4. Leader in both 4-H groups and cub scoutsSt. Matthews parish activities included:1. St. Matthew’s Parish Council Education Commission from 1969-19712. Bazaar General Chairman in 1969 and 19733. Parent’s Club Board of Directors 1969-1970
Robert was a member of the St. Matthew’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Robert expressed his faith in God by serving as a volunteer with St. Vincent DePaul and the Hertel Center for 40 years.
Robert was a lover of the outdoors, enjoying hunting and fishing. He also enjoying working in his garden and delighted in seeing his 16 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Robert is survived by his wife, Judy; sisters, Joanne Pranger of Hillsboro and Carolyn Delplanche of Cornelius; brother Thomas Pranger of Gervais; sons, David Pranger of Heppner and Charles Pranger of Beaverton; daughters, Karen Hoholik of Kihei, Hawaii, Gretchen Powell of Marysville, Washington, Julie Pranger Talty of Hillsboro, Susan Smullen of Branchburg, New Jersey and Mary Corcoran of Tigard.
Robert is also survived by his grandchildren, Joseph, Justin and Benjamin Pranger, Poy Sampantawong, Janelle and Vanessa Pranger, Ethan and Lincoln Johnson, Danyelle Hoholik, Anthony Powell, Josh and Jamie Talty, Willian Smullen IV and Zachary Smullen, Taylor and Andrew Corcoran, and his great-grandchildren, Shane and Colette Pranger.
Rememberences may go to Hertel Center, St. Matthew’s Catholic School, and the American Diabetes Association.
