MSgt. William Chet Nelson
1949 - 2015
Master Sergeant William "Bill" Nelson passed away peacefully on March 23, 2015; he was 65 years old. Bill was born on April 27, 1949 in Canton, South Dakota and moved to Oregon when he was three years old. He was the oldest of six siblings: Sandra Winterton, Wanda Hein, Robert Dee, Kermit Dee and Christopher Dee.
William attended Grover Cleveland High School in Portland, Oregon and graduated in 1968. In 1969, he enlisted in the Air Force and completed Basic Training at Lackland, AFB in Texas. During his 20 year career in the Air Force, he was stationed at several bases around the world, including Chang Chuan Kang (CCK) in Taiwan, Clark AFB in the Philippines, Pope AFB in North Carolina and Norton AFB in California.
A Vietnam Veteran, he flew many missions including airlifting enemy POW's, air evacuations of civilians, combat on/off loads and tactical air drops into besieged military bases in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. He amassed 980 combat flying hours, a total of 9000 flight hours. He held the highest qualification possible for both the C-130 and the C-141. He retired from the Air Force as a Master Sergeant in 1989.
His awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Air Force Achievement Medal.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Edna Dee, father Garret "Bud" Dee, youngest brother Christopher Edward Dee and grandparents Charless & William Wisecup.
Survived by wife Darlene, Daughters: Jennifer, Julia, Angela and Debra
Grandchildren: Jasmine, Caleb & 3 grandchildren-names unknown
Sisters: Sandra and Wanda
Brothers: Robert and Kermit
MSgt. Nelson will be laid to rest with honors at Willamette National Cemetery, 8098 SE 112th Ave. Portland, OR 97266 on Friday, April 3, 2015 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Darlene.
